Passion for Quality in Fruit

That's ARTEVOS

Artevos is an association of different shareholders who have joined their forces to support the development, promotion and marketing of new, healthy fruit varieties by contributing their strengths and competences. Active for the good taste – this has been the motivation for our search for new fruit varieties for over 25 years.

For as different as they are, all our new fruit varieties have an important common feature: a new flavourful experience that meets the highest demands. Our fruit varieties come exclusively from conventional breeding work. We work intensively with famous institutions in Germany and abroad which specialize in the breeding work.

We are firmly convinced that only together we can develop valuable ideas for new varieties. By "we" we mean ARTEVOS and our partners, but also interested nurseries who want to take advantage of our new varieties and our range of products for their production success. In order that these companies / enterprises can participate in our new fruit varieties and contribute to their multiplication, we issue licences – we are currently working with more than 200 nurseries in and outside Europe.

Sweet Cherry 'Irena'– Large Fruits with Excellent Eating Quality

՚Irena՚ is characterized by large, heart-shaped fruits with a beautiful gloss, which are very homogeneous with a remarkably smooth skin. Due to its late flowering and ripening time as well as its S-allele it is a very good polleniser for ՚Regina՚. Because of its similarity it can be harvested and marketed together with ՚Regina՚.

'Irena' is a sweet cherry variety bred by VSUO Holovousy in the Czech Republic from a cross between ‘Kordia’ and ‘M. Reward’. The trees are vigorous, upright, and well branched, developing a strong framework that supports consistent and productive orchard performance. In addition, Irena is known for its healthy and robust tree characteristics, making it a reliable choice for commercial cherry production.

Flowering occurs late in the season, helping to reduce the risk of spring frost damage. The variety belongs to the S-allele group S4S6 and therefore requires compatible pollinisers. Irena ripens during the seventh cherry week, at approximately the same time as ‘Regina’, making it an attractive option for late-season cherry production.

The variety produces large, uniform fruits with a diameter of 28 to 30 mm. The cherries are heart-shaped and highly attractive, featuring a smooth, dark red skin with an appealing glossy finish. Their homogeneous size and premium appearance make them particularly suitable for fresh market sales.

Irena offers excellent eating quality with juicy flesh that ranges from fairly firm to firm, providing a pleasant texture and good handling characteristics. The flavour is distinguished by a fruity aroma and a well-balanced sugar-to-acidity ratio. With sugar levels of 17 to 18° Brix, the variety delivers a rich, sweet taste that is complemented by refreshing acidity, resulting in a harmonious and enjoyable flavour experience.

The variety is valued for its regular and high yields, ensuring reliable production year after year. For optimal orchard management, cultivation on weak-growing rootstocks, similar to those commonly used for ‘Regina’, is recommended. Moderate pruning from an early stage helps promote the development of productive fruiting wood and supports consistent fruit quality. Overall, Irena combines attractive large fruits, balanced flavour, dependable yields, and a healthy growth habit, making it an excellent choice for modern sweet cherry orchards.

Plum 'Tophit' – Premium Size, Premium Taste

'Tophit' is a plum variety developed at the University of Geisenheim in Germany from a cross between ‘Čačak’s Beste’ and ‘President’. The tree displays medium-strong to vigorous growth and is well suited to a wide range of cultivation systems. An important advantage of the variety is its tolerance to Plum Pox Virus (Sharka), contributing to healthy and reliable orchard performance.

The variety flowers in the medium-early season and is only partially self-fertile. Its blossoms show good resistance to rainy weather during flowering, while suitable pollinisers include varieties such as ‘Jojo’ and ‘C. Schöne’. Fruits ripen from mid to late September, shortly after ‘President’, providing an attractive harvest window for growers.

Tophit produces very large, egg-shaped fruits with an appealing deep-blue skin colour and an average fruit weight of 50 to 65 grams. The fruit offers excellent eating quality, featuring a pleasantly tart skin and a medium-firm bite. The yellow flesh is firm, juicy, and finely textured with a homogeneous grain, while the stone separates well from the flesh.

The flavour profile is particularly distinctive and well balanced. Acidity plays a prominent role and is complemented by a harmonious sweetness that creates a refined taste experience. On the nose, aromas of thyme, camomile, and apple pomace are present, while the palate reveals notes of apple cider, liquorice, thyme, and prunes, giving the fruit remarkable complexity and character.

Tophit is known for its early-bearing habit as well as its high and regular yields. To ensure optimum fruit size and consistent quality, thinning to individual fruits is recommended when fruit set is heavy. Due to the exceptional fruit size, minor hairline cracks may occasionally occur. Overall, Tophit combines impressive fruit size, distinctive flavour, dependable productivity, and valuable disease tolerance, making it an excellent choice for both commercial growers and discerning consumers.

Apple Orange Crisp® 'UEB 06481' – Sweet, Juicy and Exceptionally Crisp

Orange Crisp® UEB 06481-s- is a modern apple variety bred by the UEB in the Czech Republic from a cross between ‘Fuji’ and ‘Heliodor’.

The tree shows weak to medium vigor and develops a well-branched, flat canopy structure, making it easy to manage in commercial orchards. One of its key strengths is its excellent health profile, offering tolerance to scab (Rvi 6) as well as powdery mildew and fire blight, which helps reduce disease pressure and supports sustainable production.

The variety flowers in the medium flowering period and is diploid, making it suitable for integration into a wide range of orchard systems. Fruits ripen from mid to late September and are characterized by their attractive appearance. The apples are medium-sized, uniformly globular in shape, and feature a smooth, unrusseted skin with an impressive 70 to 100 percent orange-red blush over a yellow background color.

Orange Crisp stands out for its exceptional eating quality. The flesh is very firm, crunchy, and juicy, providing a refreshing texture that consumers appreciate. The flavor is excellent, combining sweetness with a pleasant acidity and a distinctive spicy aroma, creating a well-balanced and highly appealing taste experience.

The variety is also known for its reliable production performance. Trees begin bearing fruit early and produce high and regular yields. To maintain consistent cropping, fruit thinning is recommended, especially in years with very heavy blossom, by removing excess flowers during the flowering period. After harvest, the apples retain their freshness for many weeks when stored in a cool cellar, making Orange Crisp an attractive choice for both growers and consumers seeking a high-quality apple with excellent storage potential.

'Topend Plus' – The Professional Choice for Premium Plum Production

Topend Plus -s- is a late-ripening plum variety bred at the University of Geisenheim in Germany from a cross between ‘Čačaks Beste’ and ‘Valor’. The tree displays medium-strong, compact growth, making it well suited for intensive orchard systems. It is characterized by its excellent health status, with both fruit and tree showing tolerance to Sharka (Plum Pox Virus) as well as low susceptibility to Monilia and rust, contributing to reliable and sustainable production.

Flowering occurs in the mid-early season on both one- and two-year-old shoots. The blossoms are robust, and suitable pollinisers include varieties such as ‘Presenta’, ‘Bluefrost’, ‘C. Schöne’, and Mirabelle plums. Topend Plus ripens very late, typically from the end of September to mid-October, and offers an extended harvest period, providing growers with greater flexibility during picking.

The fruit is particularly attractive, producing large, elongated plums with a characteristic steel-blue skin covered by a natural waxy bloom. With an average fruit weight of around 65 grams, the variety delivers excellent market appeal. The light-yellow flesh is firm, juicy, freestone, and highly resistant to cracking. A durable skin with subtle bitter compounds complements the fruit’s natural sweetness, creating a balanced and refined eating experience. In addition, the fruit benefits from an exceptionally long shelf life and maintains its quality well during storage.

Topend Plus is renowned for its rich and complex flavour profile. The intense aroma combines notes of blackberry, melon, green apple, and kiwi, accompanied by delicate herbal nuances that give the fruit remarkable depth and character. The variety is highly productive, bearing fruit early and consistently without a tendency toward biennial bearing.

Beyond its excellent fresh-market qualities, Topend Plus is also highly valued for processing and baking thanks to its outstanding baking performance. The fruits are largely insensitive to cracking, while the trees are distinguished by their healthy foliage and wood. Growers should note that the fruits develop their attractive coloration well before full maturity; therefore, harvesting at the correct ripening stage is essential to achieve the best flavour and eating quality.

՚Tamara՚ is a precious hard-fleshed heart cherry which starts very early to deliver yields and which impresses by its large fruits. When the fruits are picked up, they convince not only by their very good quality but especially by their excellent flavor.

'Tamara' is a sweet cherry variety developed by VSUO Holovousy in the Czech Republic from a cross between ‘Krupnoplodnaja’ and ‘Van’. The trees show moderate to strong vigour and develop a loose canopy structure with naturally drooping fruiting branches. This growth habit supports good light penetration and facilitates fruit development within the canopy.

The variety flowers in the medium-early season and belongs to the S-allele group S1S9, requiring compatible pollinisers for optimal fruit set. Tamara ripens in the fifth cherry week, positioning it in the mid-season harvest window and offering growers attractive marketing opportunities for high-quality fruit.

Tamara is particularly renowned for its exceptionally large fruits. The cherries are broad heart-shaped and develop an attractive dark red to almost black-red skin colour at maturity. Their impressive size and appealing appearance make them highly attractive for the fresh market.

The fruit offers excellent eating quality with firm, crunchy flesh that provides a pleasant texture and good consumer appeal. Its flavour is one of the variety’s most distinctive characteristics, combining a highly aromatic profile with intense fruity notes and a rich, authentic cherry taste.

Tamara begins bearing fruit at an early age and produces regular, moderate yields, providing reliable orchard performance. Due to the large fruit size, growers should be aware that the cherries may be susceptible to cracking during periods of heavy rainfall. Nevertheless, the combination of exceptional fruit size, attractive appearance, firm texture, and intense flavour makes Tamara an excellent choice for the premium sweet cherry market.
